Gardening at FPV

At Farrar Pond Village, we have more than a third of an acre at the edge of the hayfield set aside for our private and communal flower and vegetable gardens.

The Picking Garden

Picking garden

The Picking Garden provides an opportunity to pick and harvest flowers and vegetables all season long from an area that is planted and maintained on a communal basis. We ask residents interested in the picking garden to sign up in the spring and pay a small fee to pay for plants and materials. We work together to plant and maintain the garden. Each participants is asked to work one week during the year to water, weed, and dead-head the plot, as well as assisting during setup in May and teardown in October.

The planting list is developed based on past experience and requests. In recent years, it has included many varieties of cutting flowers, including zinnias, marigolds, sunflowers, snapdragons, cosmos, ageratum, and lisianthus. Vegetables include arugula, basil, tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, swiss chard, and brussels sprouts.

Individual Plots

Gardeners may also reserve an individual plot to plant and harvest on their own. We offer two sizes: a full plot measuring 20 x 37 feet, or a half plot measuring 20 x 18.5 feet, for a small fee. Gardeners are responsible for keeping their plots cared for and weeded.

Compost Bins

We have two rotating compost bins in the garden area which may be used by any resident, whether or not they are participating in the other garden opportunities. Any vegetable-based kitchen waste can be added; there will be a sign showing which side we are currently filling. We ask people who have the strength to do so to please rotate the bins a few times after adding new material.

Greenhouse

The greenhouse may also be used by any resident for starting flats of seeds, hardening off seedlings before planting in the garden, or for drying fall vegetables. It is not intended to be used for storage. Please label anything you put in the greenhouse with your name so that we may contact you if there are any issues. And make sure you latch the door shut when you leave.
